Turkey is a country on the rise. Virtually unaffected by the global banking crisis in 2008 it has remained, in the industries of mobile and banking, a regional powerhouse.
Now, in its fifth year Cardist would like to extend an extremely warm welcome to national and international visitors to come to Istanbul and explore the future of the payments industry.
In recent comments, Petere Ayliffe, Visa Europe CEO and President declared that his vision of the future for Visa was that mobile would meet banking saying that, "In the next few years, I passionately believe that we will be paying for goods using our phones.”
Cardist, now with major sponsors from both the payments industry (BKM) and from the mobile telephony industry (Turkcell) has positioned itself to take great advantage of this convergence of technologies and will host authoritative industry thought leaders and interactive panellists to discuss the future of payments.
Supporting this thought leadership there will also be an exhibition hosting strong, established players in both industries as well as smaller companies who are exhibiting cutting edge technologies to help enhance the lives of consumers and business as the evolve into the payments space.
Though Turkey has applied for EU membership, it stands apart from the other countries in the region in many respects, the large population, Muslim culture and geographic position distinguishing it from other markets. However, Turkey is among the most important countries in the wider European region given its large size, rapid growth and already sizeable consumer finance and credit card market.
Measured by total assets, the banking sector increased by 11% in dollar terms during 2009 to reach $537 billion at year-end, according to TCMB, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey. The five biggest banks accounted for 63% of total banking sector assets and the top 10 banks for 88%.
Turkey has also been at the forefront of payments technology and this year have continued that trend by being one of the first countries to begin commercial deployments of NFC based mobile phone payments.
The Cardist team look forward to welcoming you to this years event.
